Charles Condomine invites eccentric medium Madame Arcati to conduct a séance for research, accidentally summoning Elvira, his mischievous first wife’s ghost. Only Charles can see her, driving his second wife Ruth to disbelief until Elvira’s pranks become undeniable. Elvira schemes to reclaim Charles, but her sabotage kills Ruth instead, whose vengeful spirit returns to torment Elvira. Charles begs Madame Arcati to exorcise them, but she inadvertently materialises Ruth. After chaotic séances, she discovers the psychic housemaid Edith and finally banishes both ghosts. Charles escapes the house as unseen spirits wreak final destruction.
